Texas driver license renewal: how early, online or in person, and what if it expired
Texas lets you renew early and, in most cases, late. The catch is the rules for who can skip the office visit, and a hard stop at two years after expiration.
Checked against the official page in October 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm on Texas DPS: renew your driver license or ID before you act.
Get a reminder before it's too late. We'll email you ahead of the date, and you can add a phone call.

With some exceptions, a Texas driver license or ID card can be renewed up to two years before it expires. A commercial license can be renewed up to one year early.
Most can also be renewed up to two years after the expiration date. After that you cannot renew: you have to apply for a new license or ID card.
The expiration date printed on your card is your due date. The pages we read did not state how many years a license lasts, so go by the card.
Can you renew online?
Texas DPS lists these conditions. Check your own eligibility on their site before you count on it.
- Your last renewal was in person, not online.
- You are 78 or younger (people 79 and older must renew in person).
- Your license is valid, with no suspension or revocation, outstanding warrants or unpaid tickets.
- You are a U.S. citizen with a Social Security number on record.
- It is not a license type that is excluded, such as a CDL with a hazmat endorsement or a learner license.

A good reminder schedule
Our template emails you 90 days, 30 days and 7 days before the date on your card, and on the day. Because you may need an office visit, 90 days gives you time to book it.
